Wednesday, 11 December 2013 - Christmas Dinner and Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach

At Two Fat Indians

And Ge made each of us a beautiful silk flower!

Christmas dinner this year was at Two Fat Indians in Cottesloe.

Our book - Tulip Fever, written by Deborah Moggach was discussed over a feast of delicious, spicy food.

Ge made us each a beautiful flower out of fabric.  She is so clever.  She also made us gorgeous paper Christmas trees to take home.

Thank You Ge!

Ca pondered over the choice of book for November, a busy time for all.  This one was chosen especially as it was a light read. It is always difficult to discuss a book when one is at dinner with so much happening around but we actually managed to a little bit more this year.

  • Author - We looked at the author and noted that she was also the author of "The Very Best Marigold Hotel" which most of us had seen at the movies, last year. We looked at a few interviews which gave us an insight into how she writes and her views on life in general.

  • Setting - 17th Century Amsterdam, at the height of Tulip Fever

  • A tale about art, greed, lust, infidelity, deception, and finally retribution

  • Historically interesting - The history of Tulips and how Tulip Fever actually happened was fascinating

  • The book had mixed reactions with some thoroughly enjoying it and others finding the tale not quite believable ... Reading the background on the history of Tulips and Tulip Fever in Amsterdam is recommended as it made the plot more meaningful for others.  Some also felt the characters needed to be developed to be real. Yet others felt for the characters and the nature of the events that unfolded.

  • The book was a page-turner for some and all agreed that it was a light read.  One of us listened to the audio book. (read by Rula Lenska)
